Abstract:
In this article the history of the development of mine cruisers is described, this class arose in the end XIX of the century as the consequence of the numerous attempts to create properly nauti-cal torpedo boats and to ensure good conditions of inhabiting to their commands. Therefore these ships had much larger displacement, on them was established the intensive artillery armament, frequently due to weakening of torpedo. As the their basic destination was considered the defense of the large ships – of Battleships and cruisers – from the attacks of enemy torpedo boats in the open sea, and additional – the attack of the ships of enemy by torpedoes. However, the analysis of their combat employment confirmed that they cannot effectively protect large ships from the at-tacks of torpedo boats, since they considerably be inferior to the latter in the speed, since they con-siderably be inferior to the latter in the speed, but as the impact torpedo ships because of the large sizes and again after all low speeds also proved to be defective. With the advent of destroyers the class of mine cruisers rapidly and completely disappeared from the fleets of the leading sea powers.
